BENEFITS OF SCCAP MEMBERSHIP

SCCAP offers three types of membership—each comes with all of the excellent benefits listed below!

  • Full Member (for APA Members)
  • Associate Members (for non-APA Members)
  • Student Members

Membership in Division 53 confers many benefits, including journal and newsletter subscriptions, a website and two listservs, student benefits, and a forum for clinicians, researchers, educators, and students to participate in ongoing debate and collectively influence important issues facing our field.  Here are some highlights:

Our Website

SCCAP has an exciting new website and online membership database. Instead of mailing your 2010 membership dues, you will now be able to pay by credit card using a secure online payment system. However, if you prefer, you may still pay by personal check. To do so, you can download a renewal membership form and send the form with your payment to the address on the form.

If you are a current Division 53 member and wish to access your online membership account, a Username has been created for you. You will receive either an email or a letter with log in information.

Mandy Jensen-Doss, PhD, is our Web Editor, and will be posting articles relevant to our membership. The website is a valuable tool for keeping up with Division activities and important issues in the field. We hope you will visit the site regularly to stay current with late-breaking Division news and to address your questions about the Division.

Our Journal

The Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, edited by Paul Frick, PhD, is a leading child psychopathology and treatment journal (ranked 9th out of 88 clinical psychology journals by ISI Web of Knowledge for 2008 in terms of impact). The journal publishes original contributions on development and evaluation of assessment and intervention techniques, clinical child and adolescent and cross-cultural and sociodemographic issues, training and professional practice in clinical child and adolescent psychology, and child advocacy. In addition to the hard copy you receive, electronic journal access will be provided through the Member Control Panel on the website.

Quest BehavioralPro

Division 53 members are provided behavioral health information for clinical practice, teaching, and research purposes from Quest Health Systems, Inc. Members have access to thousands of journals, psychological and medical textbooks, government and open databases, prescreened peer-reviewed articles, and online databases. This can also be accessed through the website.

Our Newsletter

InBalance, edited by Michael Southam-Gerow, PhD (Brian Chu, PhD, is Editor Elect and begins his duties in 2010), is published three times a year and offers topical features, news of interest, and important policy-related information. Recent issues have focused on board certification, multidimensional family therapy, and evidence-based treatments.

Our Listservs

Jarrod Leffler, PhD, ABPP, is our Listserv Manager. A members-only listserv provides a discussion forum for scientific and professional topics. An announce-only listserv alerts you to Division developments in a timely fashion, but blocks the Reply feature. Students may join either of these listservs as well as a Student Only listserv. Membership in all listservs is optional.

Convention Activities

Eric Youngstrom, PhD and Jennifer Freeman, PhD, are Chair and Co-Chair, respectively, for the 2010 APA Annual Convention SCCAP programming. We sponsor several APA Convention activities, including symposia, workshops, poster sessions, and a social hour that allow you to network, learn, exchange information, and stay abreast of current clinical and research topics in our field.

Continuing Education

In addition to CE credits that can be obtained at the APA annual convention, SCCAP co-sponsors several regional conferences designed to advance evidence-based assessment and treatment of children and adolescents. Recently, these have included the Niagara Conference on Evidence-based Practices and the Kansas Conference on Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. SCCAP is working to develop on-line CE opportunities, our goal is to have the first of these available on our revamped website in 2010.

Task Forces

SCCAP commissions task forces to investigate issues pertinent to child mental health. Our current task forces are Dissemination of Evidence-Based Practice chaired by Bill Pelham, PhD, ABPP and Ethnic Minority Children and Adolescents, chaired by Yo Jackson, PhD, ABPP.

More Student Benefits

SCCAP is dedicated to encouraging student participation and strives to maintain sensitivity to the needs of people pursuing training in the field. Students are represented on the SCCAP Board of Directors current Student Representatives are Liz Frazier, MA and Rebecca Siegel, MS. SCCAP sponsors sessions on finding and securing internships in clinical child psychology at the APA annual convention. Students have their own Student Listserv and may also participate in the other two division listservs. Students also receive their first year of membership free.

And don’t forget…..Advocacy for Children’s Mental Health!

Perhaps most importantly, our strength and size offers a crucial opportunity for advocacy. Thanks to your membership, SCCAP is able to work towards the improvement of children’s mental health care services at local and national levels and offer advocacy to support mental health careers and training. Because the size of our Division is directly related to our representation on APA’s Council of Representatives, our continued growth has allowed us to obtain seats on APA task forces and committees, and to participate in ongoing discussions regarding clinical child specialization and accreditation.
